The best online UPS store in Pakistan is one that sells real double-conversion units from a well-known brand, lists both kVA and kW ratings, gives you the datasheet, and makes sure that service engineers and extra batteries are easy to get to. Before you compare anything else, you should look at those four things.

If you have an online UPS (uninterruptible power supply), each piece of equipment always runs from its own inverter, so if the power goes out, there is no break in the power. That’s why it’s usually the best choice for machines with sensitive electronics, servers, CCTV recorders, lab and clinic equipment, and places where voltage changes and load shedding happen often.

This article talks about how an online UPS is different from other types, who needs one, how to size one, and how to check out a seller before you pay them. It’s written for people who buy things for an office, clinic, or small business, but people who use sensitive tools at home will also find it useful.

What an online UPS does differently

There are three main types of UPS machines. A standby (offline) UPS sends power from the wall straight to your equipment and only switches to battery power when the power goes out. A line-interactive UPS does the same thing as a regular UPS, but it also has automatic voltage regulation (AVR), which fixes small voltage drops and rises without touching the battery. An online UPS, which is also known as double-conversion, continuously changes incoming AC to DC and back to AC. This way, your load is fed by the inverter and is protected from most problems with the mains.

The IEC 62040-3 standard divides UPS output performance into three groups: VFD (offline), VI (line-interactive), and VFI (double-conversion). VFI means that the output is not affected by the voltage or frequency of the mains. It talks about the codes in Schneider Electric’s white paper on the standard. Some models also have an eco or high-efficiency mode with less protection.

Check the datasheet to see how each working mode is classified

In general, values are different for each type. DCD’s overview of static UPS systems says that a standby unit needs about 10 milliseconds to detect a failure and switch, but there is no gap for an online UPS in normal mode. Always read the unit’s data sheet.

Energy and heat are given up in exchange. An online UPS wastes more energy as heat than simpler types because it changes power twice. It generally needs more air flow. Find out what mode the factory set it to by asking. An eco mode gives up some isolation to save power.

When a line-interactive UPS is enough

A line-interactive UPS with AVR should be enough to protect a desktop PC, a Wi-Fi router, a modem, and a few monitors that are connected to a fairly stable power source. If you choose double conversion for a job that doesn’t need it, you will get more heat, noise from the fans, and power use for nothing. A UPS can also buy minutes, but not more than a few hours. Get a generator or a hybrid solar system with batteries for when the power goes out for a long time.

Who should buy an online UPS in Pakistan

Outages, voltage swings and generators that switch in and out are everyday conditions here, so it pays to match the UPS type to the equipment. The table below covers common situations.

Equipment or siteSuggested UPS typeReason
Servers, NAS, core network switchesOnlineNo transfer gap and a clean, regenerated output
CCTV recorder and camera power suppliesLine-interactive or onlineDepends on how stable your supply is and how critical continuous recording is
Clinics, diagnostic labs, dental equipmentOnline, subject to the equipment maker’s adviceSensitive electronics. Follow each device’s manual.
CNC machines, PLCs, control panelsOnlineControllers can reset during very short interruptions
Sites that run on a generatorOnlineBetter tolerance of generator voltage and frequency swings. Ask the supplier to confirm generator compatibility
Home office PC and routerLine-interactiveUsually adequate for ordinary electronics

For life-support or other clinical equipment, follow the device manufacturer’s UPS requirement, not a general article.

How to choose an online UPS supplier in Pakistan

When people in Pakistan look for an online UPS supplier, they find four different types of sellers. You know what to ask when you know which one you are dealing with.

The four types of UPS seller

Seller typeWhat they usually offerWhat to verify
Authorised brand reseller or distributorGenuine units sold through the brand’s own warranty channelWritten proof of authorisation from the brand
UPS importer or stockistWider choice and ready stock across several brandsWho handles warranty claims, and where
Power-solutions company with engineersSite survey, installation, commissioning, industrial UPS and maintenance contractsEngineers in your city and sample service-contract terms
Online store or marketplace listingConvenience and deliveryDatasheet link, kW rating, battery details, warranty and return terms

Ten questions to ask before you order

  1. Is this unit true double-conversion, and what is its IEC 62040-3 classification code? Ask for the datasheet of the exact model.
  2. What are the kVA and kW ratings, and what is the output power factor?
  3. What is the transfer time to battery and to bypass, and is normal or eco mode the default?
  4. Is the output a pure sine wave when running on battery?
  5. Which batteries are included (type, voltage, Ah), are they inside the unit or in an external cabinet, and are they covered by the warranty?
  6. What runtime should I expect at my load, and can you show the calculation?
  7. Who services the unit in my city, how fast do they respond, and can I see the service-contract terms?
  8. Which spare parts and replacement batteries do you stock locally?
  9. Do you provide installation, an earthing check and commissioning with a load test?
  10. Can you give me a customer with a similar installation whom I can call, rather than a testimonial page?

A good supplier answers these in writing. Vague answers tell you something too.

What changes a quote

Some good reasons why quotes for the same kVA can be different are the capacity in kVA or kW, whether the power is single-phase or three-phase, the brand tier, the length and scope of the warranty, the installation and cabling, and any service contracts. Don’t compare the totals of these things; compare them line by line.

Size your online UPS before you request quotes

kVA, kW and the power factor trap

UPS sizes are usually given in kVA, which stands for “apparent power.” However, the real power your equipment uses is measured in watts. The power factor connects them: kW = kVA x power factor. According to this TechTarget guide to choosing a UPS, some small units have a power factor of about 0.7, while most new online models have a power factor of 0.9 or 1.0. Because of this, two UPS units with the same kVA sticker can have very different wattages, so always check both.

Worked example: a small office in Lahore

These are assumed figures. Replace them with measured or nameplate values for your own site.

  • 8 workstations at an average of 120 W each, one small server at 350 W, and a router, switch, modem and NVR together at 100 W.
  • Target runtime of 30 minutes, 30% headroom, an output power factor of 0.9, inverter efficiency of 90% and 80% usable battery energy.
StepCalculationResult
1. Connected load8 x 120 W + 350 W + 100 W1,410 W
2. Add 30% headroom1,410 W x 1.3about 1,833 W
3. Convert to VA at power factor 0.91,833 W / 0.9about 2,037 VA
4. Pick the next standard sizeNext common rating above 2,037 VA3 kVA class
5. Battery energy for 30 minutes1.41 kW x 0.5 h / 0.9 / 0.8about 0.98 kWh nominal

Compare the result to the wattage as well. At a power factor of 0.9, a 3 kVA machine gives off 2,700 W, which is more than 1,833 W. It gives off 2,100 W at a power factor of 0.7, which is enough to work but not much more. A clamp-meter reading or the UPS’s own load display is a better way to figure out what the average draw is.

Common mistakes when buying an online UPS

  • Buying on VA alone. The watt rating decides what you can actually connect.
  • Treating pure sine wave as the same thing as online. Pure sine describes the output waveform, while online describes the design.
  • Ignoring the battery. Check the type, the warranty and where replacements are available.
  • Choosing online for a load that only needs line-interactive. You pay in heat and power use for protection you do not need.
  • Skipping ventilation. Online units run warmer, and Pakistani summers add to the load on a closed room.
  • Paying without written warranty and service terms. Get them for both the unit and the batteries.
  • Running close to 100% load. Leave room for growth and start-up surges.

Online UPS, generators and solar: how they fit together

An online UPS keeps things safe. The battery lasts for minutes to hours, depending on its size, so it’s not a long-lasting power source. Businesses add a generator, a solar combination system with batteries, or both when the power goes out for a long time.

The voltage and frequency of a generator can change for a short time when it first turns on. A double-conversion UPS regenerates its power, which is why generators are often used with them. Make sure the supplier knows about compatibility and the right UPS-to-generator size for your site.

An online UPS and a solar hybrid inverter do some of the same things, but they are not the same thing. The hybrid converter controls the panels, the batteries, and the grid so that the grid is used less and there is a backup. The online UPS is designed to keep sensitive loads running smoothly even when the power goes out. In Pakistan, the term “UPS” is also used for home inverter-style units, so make sure you know what a post is for.

If you are planning solar, start with Peakofsun’s solar calculator to estimate system size. Guides on hybrid and on-grid systems and on lithium and lead-acid batteries explain the choices. Then ask your installer whether a separate online UPS for critical loads makes sense behind the hybrid system.

Installation and maintenance basics

  • Place the UPS in a ventilated, dust-controlled room, away from direct sun and moisture.
  • Have the earthing and the input breaker rating checked at installation.
  • Run a load test at commissioning, then repeat runtime tests periodically.
  • Replace batteries according to the manufacturer’s guidance and keep a log of the installation date.
  • For critical equipment, get any maintenance contract in writing before you buy.

Final advice

Choose the type of UPS for the load first, then the company. Write down the number of watts you’re connecting, how long you want the generator to run, and any plans you have for solar or a generator. Send the same specs to two or three suppliers, and don’t just look at the sums; also look at how they answered the ten questions. One that lists only a VA number is not as good as one that has clear datasheets, local service, and written warranty terms for both the unit and the batteries.

If solar is also on your list, use Peakofsun’s solar calculator and book a site survey so the UPS, inverter and batteries are planned together.
