There are several places in Pakistan where you can buy a Riello UPS. The right model for you will depend on what you plug into it, not the brand name. A line-interactive unit like the Vision Dual can be used in a small shop or home office. An online double-conversion unit like the Sentinel Dual is better for servers, medical devices, or electronics that need to be kept safe.

Figure out your load in watts, how many minutes or hours of backup you need, and find out who in your city handles warranty claims before you call a dealer. This guide talks about Riello’s key ranges in simple terms, gives a worked sizing example, and tells you what to check before you pay.

An important point that many buyers miss is that a UPS and a solar hybrid inverter do different jobs. Which one you choose will affect what you should buy.

Riello UPS in Pakistan: which range does what

Riello UPS is a European company that makes UPS systems ranging from small desktop units to big systems for data centers. The names are hard to understand, but they are organized into three groups based on how the unit keeps your equipment safe. The ratings below come from public listings at stores, so make sure they match the numbers on the datasheet for the model you are offered.

Range (model code)How it worksRatings seen in listingsTypical fit
iPlug / iDialog (IPG, IDG)Offline (standby)About 400 to 1,600 VASimple PC, router, and other small electronics that can handle a quick switch-over
Net Power (NPW)Line-interactive600 to 2,000 VAHome PC, router, TV
Vision / Vision Dual (VST, VSD)Line-interactive with voltage regulation; tower or rackAbout 800 to 3,000 VASmall office, network gear, CCTV
Sentinel Pro (SEP)Online double conversionAbout 700 to 2,200 VASmall and sensitive server and PC loads
Sentinel Dual (SDH)Online double conversion (VFI)1 to 3 kVAServers, network racks, small labs
Sentinel Dual (SDU)Online double conversion (VFI)4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 kVAListings describe server rooms and mission-critical or electromedical loads.

There are also larger Multi Sentry and modular ranges, and you can find some of them in Pakistani dealer and classified ads. Make sure they are available and there is local support before you make plans around them.

Offline, line-interactive and online: what changes for you

Offline (standby): the equipment gets its power straight from the mains. If the power goes out, the unit will switch to its battery. Even though it’s easy, it doesn’t do much to fix voltage changes.

Line-interactive: small voltage changes are fixed by an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) without using the battery. After a very short time, the inverter takes over when the mains power goes out. Most modern computer power supplies can handle this.

Online double conversion: the UPS always changes the incoming power to DC and back to clean AC, which means that the inverter always powers your load. The load is kept away from disturbances in the mains, and there is no transfer time. Online units generally cost more than the other types, and the design is more complicated.Eaton’s guide to UPS topologies explains the same three designs from another manufacturer’s view.

The battery is used more often in places where the mains voltage often goes outside the AVR window of a line-interactive unit. Need to know the input voltage range for a certain model? Ask the seller.

How to size a Riello UPS: a worked example

For starters, work in watts, which is what your equipment actually draws. What is VA? It’s the UPS’s apparent power, and watts are VA times the power factor.Eaton’s VA versus watts explainer shows the relationship in detail.

  • Only put on the list the things that need to stay on during a power outage.
  • Write down the number of watts on each nameplate or use a plug-in power meter to find out.
  • Add up the watts.
  • Add about 20% extra space to account for start-up surges and future additions.
  • VA is found by dividing watts by power factor. If you don’t know it, use 0.8.
  • Pick a model whose watt rating and VA rating are both higher than your numbers.

Example: a small office with a CCTV setup. The following wattages are just assumptions used as an example. Before you buy, make sure you measure your own equipment.

DeviceQuantityWatts each (assumed)Total watts
Desktop PC2200400
Monitor23060
Router and modem12020
CCTV recorder with 4 cameras16060
LED lights41040
Connected load  580
With 20% headroom  696
In VA at power factor 0.8  870 VA

This load can be handled by a 1,500 VA unit that puts out about 1,350 W. There is still room for a printer. Store listings show that the Vision Dual 1500 and the Sentinel Dual 1500 are in that class. If the PCs are used as servers or the equipment is sensitive, the online Sentinel Dual is a better choice for the same amount of power.

Runtime: why minutes are normal and hours need planning

Most internal batteries are sized to handle short power outages and let equipment shut down safely. One page from a UK store that sells the 3,000 VA Vision Dual says that it lasts about 4 minutes at full load. When the load is well below the UPS rating, the runtime goes up. For example, a 600 W load on a 1,350 W unit lasts a lot longer than a full load.

According to store listings, Riello’s Sentinel Dual range has extended-runtime (ER) models and battery extension packs for longer backup. Make sure you get the right pack for your exact model.

Planning estimate for an external battery bank. The battery voltage times the amp-hours times the usable fraction times the UPS efficiency, divided by the load in watts, gives you the runtime in hours. Put four 12 V, 100 Ah lead-acid batteries in series to get 48 V and 4,800 Wh. Assume that only half of that can be used, the UPS is 90% efficient, and the load is 600 W. That’s 2,160 Wh, or about 3.6 hours, when you multiply 4,800 by 0.5 and 0.9. This is just a rough estimate; it’s not a Riello specification. The charger’s capacity and battery voltage must match the model.

You should only use lithium batteries if the company that made your UPS says it’s okay to use that type of battery in that model. Check out our guide to lithium and tubular batteries for a more in-depth look at the two types.

Using a Riello UPS with a generator or a solar system

Generators. The voltage and frequency of a generator can change, especially when the load changes. Make sure you get the input voltage and frequency window for the exact model from the seller. A 6 kVA Sentinel Dual from one store has an input working range of 184 to 264 V. Get a generator that’s the right size for the UPS input load and battery charging.

Solar. A solar inverter is not the same thing as a UPS. Most models, like the Sentinel Dual, take AC power and aren’t made to connect directly to panels. If your home already has an on-grid or hybrid solar system, the UPS just sees AC from your wiring and works as normal. A hybrid solar inverter with battery storage is the better tool for backing up your whole house, including your fridge or air conditioner. If you want to use solar power too, the Peakofsun solar calculator can help you figure out how big of a system you should start with in kW.

What to check before buying a Riello UPS in Pakistan

  • Exact model code. Ask for a code like SDU 5000 or VSD 1500, not just a kVA size. Different variants, like ER and PD, have different batteries and run times.
  • Supplier credentials. Get written proof from the seller that they are an official Riello partner, and then check it with Riello.
  • Warranty in writing. Write down how long it lasts, whether batteries are covered separately, who picks up and fixes the unit, and which cities they do it in.
  • Battery details. Find out the type, voltage, capacity, and how often it should be replaced. Also, make sure that replacements are easy to find in your area.
  • Physical fit. Listings for the SDU 5000 in stores show that it is about 131 x 640 x 448 mm, weighs 45 kg, and makes 48 dB of noise. Plan for floor space, air flow, and a safe way to lift it.
  • Electrical readiness. It is important to ask the installer to check the earthing, breaker ratings, and cable sizes for both the input and output.
  • Monitoring. Check for USB, RS-232, or network card options if you want to get alerts or shut down the unit remotely.
  • Spares and service. Find out where the nearest service engineer is and how fast they can get to you.

What decides the price, and how to compare quotes

Two quotes for a Riello UPS can only be compared if the specification is the same. These things can make a quote go up or down:

  • How much power the unit is rated for in kVA or kW, and whether it is single-phase or three-phase.
  • Type: units that are online usually cost more than units that are line-interactive or offline.
  • The size and type of the batteries, as well as whether or not extended-runtime packs are included.
  • The shape (tower or rack) and any extras, like network cards.
  • Length of the warranty and terms of service.
  • Stock level and wait time for importing.

You should ask each seller to give you the model code, whether batteries are included, the length of the warranty, whether installation and delivery are included, and a name for someone to contact after the sale. It’s not fair to compare quotes that don’t include batteries or installation. Ask the supplier for a written quote or a site survey to get an exact number.

When a Riello online UPS may not be the right choice

  • Light loads that tolerate a brief switch-over. Most of the time, a line-interactive unit is enough. Prices for online models are usually higher.
  • Heavy motor loads. A/Cs and water pumps use a lot of power when they first turn on. For these, a hybrid solar setup works best.
  • Small, unventilated rooms. Since online units are always running, they make noise and heat.
  • Very long outages. Depending on its batteries, a UPS can cover minutes to a few hours. Many hours of load shedding need a big battery bank, a generator, or a hybrid solar setup.
  • Battery upkeep. Plan ahead from the start, because every UPS battery wears out and needs replacing after a while.

Choosing a Riello UPS in Pakistan: a practical next step

Don’t start with the brand, but with your load. Make a list of the things that need to stay on, change the watts to VA with some room to spare, and pick line-interactive for general equipment or online for sensitive loads. Then decide how many minutes or hours of backup you need. This matters more than the UPS rating when it comes to choosing a battery.

Before you pay, check the supplier, the exact model code, and the written warranty. If you really want to back up your whole home or business for a long time, you should compare a UPS with a hybrid solar setup. Peakofsun solar calculator can help you figure out what size system you need in kW, and a site survey will confirm what is right for your roof and loads.
